Graduation isn’t far away and now is the time that we start to get calls like this:

“Umm… we had our son (or daughter’s) senior portraits taken at their school, and we hate them.”

You kid only graduates high school once, so it’s definitely an occasion worth marking. But it’s not worth paying out of whazooo for lame pictures you despise. People are often shocked to find that our prices (especially on reprints) are dramatically cheaper than the traditional senior portrait racket. This is partially because as a small business, we have very low overhead, but it’s partially because people have just always paid a lot for senior portraits because they didn’t think they had a choice. Well, you do!

A great senior portrait should, above all, showcase the personality of the graduate. How do you manage that?

Get the mandatory cap and gown pic, but also go for pictures in outfits that they like – they’ll feel more comfortable, which means a much better photo. And to heck with photographers that charge you per outfit or limit wardrobe changes. That’s just nickle-and-dime-ing.

Go WHERE they want – feature scenery that is meaningful to them such as the football field where he scored that amazing touchdown, the horse farm where she rode after school each week, or even the yard of your home. These places have wonderful memories and will help to give the graduate (and photo) more expression.

Tie in some props that are significant – seniors have often dedicated years of their young lives to honing their skills at basketball, dancing, music and other passions, so why not reflect that?

Let them take the lead. Teens are often amazingly full of themselves and yet blindingly self-conscious, all at the same time. And sometimes a helpful suggestion from mom or dad can be perceived as a nagging insult – and result in frustration.

Overall, senior pics are a great time to capture one of those last fleeting moments of youth… and before you know it, you’ll be angsting about their wedding photos.

My husband and I got married with pretty much no budget. Our reception was in our church’s fellowship hall, potluck, with friends playing acoustic music outside. It was a blast and we had no stress about bills to pay. Our one regret – we probably have the world’s worst wedding photos (haha – isn’t that ironic?) So we totally get it when we hear couples stressing about their wedding budget (or lack thereof). What’s a couple to do when they want to get married, but money is tight? Here are tips we’ve accumulated over the years that should help to slash some costs.

MAKE A BUDGET & PRIORITIZE.
This sounds like common sense, but is hard to do when you’re newly engaged and people are asking you a million questions about your wedding plans. But, if money is limited, you can rein in spending by choosing the top areas that are most important to you. Maybe it’s dress-photos-honeymoon. Perhaps huge party-flowers-live music. It’s way better to have a few amazing highlights than to have so-so stuff all around. And consider WHY you’re spending. If you don’t like cake, why spend $500 on a cake? Is your mom pressuring you to get a limo when you really don’t care? If you can put on a thick skin and accept that people may challenge your decisions, you can focus on what’s important to you. And let the rest go.

CONSIDER THE LONG-TERM.
I will shamelessly recommend that couples not skimp on wedding photos because they are ultimately one of the few things that last. Plus, a skilled wedding photographer can deliver amazing pictures even from the most simple, frugal wedding. We’ve done plenty of weddings in backyard tents, but you wouldn’t know it from looking at the photos. Remember that a wedding is one day, so how much are you really willing to spend on items that will be used for a few hours?

RECONSIDER TRADITIONS.
Our society today has crazy high expectations of what a wedding should be, but traditionally, weddings were much smaller and simpler. I blame reality television (mostly because you can blame reality TV for almost anything). Ask your parents and grandparents what their weddings were like. My parents got married in a pastor’s house, my mom wore a cute dress she made herself, and they celebrated afterwards by eating at a nice Chinese restaurant. Seems lame by today’s standards, but it was totally normal back then. And you know what… they’ve been happily married for almost 40 years.

What are your best tips for keeping the wedding budget in check?

Photographing kids can be amazingly tough, but we’ve developed a few tips and tricks over the years that help get the job done (and keep parent and child from breaking into tears…)

1. LET GO OF YOUR EXPECTATIONS – Often, unrealistic expectations are our own worst enemy. We might fantasize about cherub-like pictures of poised and smiling faces (in coordinated outfits, of course) but come on…. are your kids perfect angels most of the time? Ours aren’t. Before you even break out the camera, accept that perfection is not going to happen. A more realistic goal is to get a few cute pictures of your children in all their (im)perfect glory.

2. MAKE IT FUN – Take them to the park. Go to the PlayPlace. Set them free in an environment that they love and THEN take out the camera. If you want pictures of your children happy, you have to do something that actually makes them happy. Children are often scared of bright flashes and the sterile environment of a studio – in fact, many kids are a bit freaked out by a camera. I find it helpful to take a picture and then show them the results on the playback screen. The most frightened, skeptical child will often become intrigued and open up this way, excited to see themselves on the little screen.

3. KEEP IT LAID BACK – There’s no faster way to make a kid grumpy and disinterested than to plead over and over, “Smile! Look at the camera! SMILE!” Something primal rises up in them and soon enough, you can’t even get the kid to look your way. Tempers flare, yelling ensues, and then the tears start rolling. Do your best to keep your calm and keep it fun, even if that means putting the camera away for a while.

4. FORGET THE FAMILY PHOTO – We often want that perfect family photo with everyone together, smiling, glowing with the love of being together as a family…. but there is no harder photo to get. Especially with kids involved, there are many variables that easily go awry (someone’s not smiling, someone’s not looking in the right direction, someone’s picking their nose). If the family photo just isn’t working, focus instead on getting great shots of each individual and then put them together in a collage frame or as a series on your wall. This works particularly well for very small children who may not even understand the concept of “Look here! Smile!”

5. THINK OF THEM AS WILD BEASTS – Think of yourself as a National Geographic photographer and the children as beasts in the wild. Stay out of their way and keep the camera action sneaky. My husband often uses the trick of folding out the tilt screen of his camera so that he can hold the camera down low and take pictures on the sly. We also love to use sports mode – like wild animals, children move quickly and so unpredictably – if your camera has a sports mode, you can get many shots per second so you’re much more likely to get a cute pic!

6. TIME THE SHOOT JUST RIGHT – The best time for this type of shoot is right after a nap and a meal. Bring snacks, drinks, extra outfits and wipes for the boogied nose that will surely start running as soon as you take a picture. Keep the session short, but if the kids start to melt down, grab a few pictures of that too – it may not seem charming at the moment, but in a few years, you’ll look back on those screaming faces and think, “Oh… how cute!”

What challenges you most about photographing kids? What are your best tips?
